The mountains in flames on the Loferer Steinberge and the surrounding mountains – experience the unique tradition of the summer solstice in Pinzgau.
When the longest day meets the shortest night , fires are lit everywhere on the mountains in the Salzburger Saalachtal. It is an age-old tradition that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Every year, numerous associations, led by the Lofer Mountain Rescue Service, set off to light the mountain fires around the summer solstice to celebrate the longest day of the year . As soon as it gets dark, large solstice fires light up the mountain peaks and create a mystical atmosphere. The locals call this custom “fire burning”.
The Sacred Heart fire is also lit in neighboring Tyrol. This goes back to the Sacred Heart Oath in 1796, which was intended to establish Tyrolean unity in the fight against the French and Bavarians. At that time, mountain fires were lit to symbolize the oath.
